Welcome to Maui
|
Maui is the largest Island in Maui County in the U.S. State of Hawaii. This beautiful Pacific jewel is the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands and as of 2006 had a population of 139,884 full-time residents. Maui is one of the most visited islands in the world due to its miles of smooth white sand beaches, clear blue waters and breathtaking sunsets. More than 2,000,000 visitors each year just cannot get enough of this tropical oasis and most residents wouldnt leave here for the world.
Captain James Cook first discovered Maui on November 26, 1778. However, because he was unable to find a suitable area for landing his boats, Capt. Cook never actually set foot on the island. Jean Franois de Galaup de La Perouse was the first European man to land on Maui on May 29, 1786. Soon after, loggers, traders, whalers and missionaries followed suit. This island was a major whaling center until the end of the 19th century.

Although the cost of living has increased over the years, Maui is growing rapidly these days due in part to visitors who fall in love with this enchanting isle and decide to relocate or retire here. Who hasn't had this dream at least once, huh?
