Hawaii is a U.S.
island state sitting in the crystal blue waters of the North
Pacific Ocean. Hawaii was annexed
as a U.S. territory in 1898,
but it was not until August 21, 1959 that it became the fiftieth state admitted
into the United States.
According to census estimates conducted in 2005, there were 1,275,194 permanent
residents living in the AlohaState. Because of its
spectacular location and perfect tropical climate, Hawaii is a major tourist destination for
millions of travelers from all over the globe.
Until
Europeans first discovered Hawaii
in 1778, Polynesians inhabited these spectacular islands. The British explorer
Captain James Cook discovered these isles in 1178 and named them the Sandwich Islands in honor of John Montagu, 4th
Earl of Sandwich. After Captain Cook plotted and published the coordinates to
these spectacular islands more and more people started coming to Hawaii. Missionaries,
explorers and whalers were among the first who came to this island paradise
with the intention of divulging Christianity and establishing trade in the
area. With the success of the whaling, industry came traders and merchants and Hawaii’s population grew
in turn. Since those early beginnings, Hawaii
has become a haven for folks who always wanted to live in one of the most
spellbinding places on earth.
Hawaii’s economy prior to statehood
thrived thanks to the whaling, military, tourism and agricultural sectors.
Since 1959, tourism has been the dominant industry on the island followed
closely by sugar production and coffee, livestock and agricultural exports,
mostly pineapple, sugar cane and macadamia nuts. Tourism accounts for almost
25% of the islands Gross State Product but officials are working on ways to
diversify Hawaii’s
economy.
